Rev. Johnny Bruce:
A Kind and Gentle Shepherd

Rev. Johnny Bruce served as pastor of Flipper Chapel from 1978 to 1983. Uniquely, he and his siblings (which include Rev. Yale Bruce, pastor of Grant Memorial AME in Jacksonville, and present-day Flipperites Sis. Beulah Gregory and Sis. Coline James) were "reared up" in Flipper by their grandparents, Bro. Howard and Sis. Beulah Hinton. He received his call to preach the word of God in the year 1966 and his first appointment in 1970. Remembered as as a "kind and gentle shepherd" to his flock, Pastor Bruce headed several congregations in the Big Bend area before his retirement--these included Bethel AME (Monticello) and New Bethel AME (Quincy), as well as Flipper. Sadly, Pastor Bruce was called home by our Lord on March 13 of this year. He is survived by a devoted wife, Sis. Gussie Mae Bruce, who still attends services at Flipper; a daughter, Saundra Bruce-Burgess; and three sons--Spencer, Reginald, and Michael Bruce. We at Praise would like to thank Sis. Bruce for providing the above information and hope that the Lord continues to bless and keep her and her loving family.
